The U.S. theatrical broadcast of the hit Disney musical Newsies, which debuted in cinemas in February, will return to movie theatres nationwide for a two-day encore presentation.
Fathom Events is partnering with Disney Theatrical Productions to bring the stage show back to the big screen August 5 at 12:55 PM and August 9 at 7 PM. The screenings will include behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast and creators.
Tickets for Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical! can be purchased at FathomEvents.com or participating box offices.
They are joined by members of the North American tour, including Steve Blanchard as Joseph Pulitzer and Aisha de Haas as Medda Larkin.
The filmed performance was also made available digitally and on demand through Disney Movies Anywhere May 23. The release also included five behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Newsies was inspired by the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899,” when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful New York newspaper publishers.
The stage version introduces seven new songs by the original team of Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour, “Letter from the Refuge,” while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”
The musical took home Tony Awards in 2012 for Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli) and Best Original Score (Alan Menken and Jack Feldman) and was nominated for Best Actor (Jordan), Best Book (Harvey Fierstein), Best Direction (Jeff Calhoun), Best Orchestrations (Daniel Troob), Best Scenic Design (Tobin Ost and Sven Ortel), and Best Musical.
