During special evenings the audiences are able to give a grade for the play they have seen. If the score is above 7.9 the play is automatically nominated. Original plays, as well as previously produced material, can be nominated for the award.

The 12 nominations for the 1997 - 1998 theatre season are De Bezoeker (The Visitor), De nacht van de Pauw (The Night of the Peacock), Stilleven (Still Life), De kus van de Spinvrouw (The Kiss of the Spider Woman), Schnes uit een huwelijk (Scenes from a Marriage), Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre), De Wereldverbeteraar (The World Improver), De Mensenhater (The Misanthrope), Hamlet (Hamlet), Ik heb het met 'm gedaan (My Night with Reg), Al mijn zonen (All My Sons) and Ritter, Dene, Voss (Ritter, Dene, Voss).

The winner of the Gouden Gids Publieks Prijs 1998, which consists of 100.000 Dutch Guilders (approximately $50,000 US), will be announced in a special broadcast on AVRO Dutch television on June 2, 1998.
