News On a Boeing: American Singers Fly to Barcelona to Sing Sondheim March 27-29 "Where ya goin'?" is the question of one of Company's more famous songs, and the answer for a handful of Americans is, "Barcelona — to sing Sondheim songs."

American director Bill Fabris will stage a concert of songs by Company composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim as part of the late-night series at The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain, 11 PM March 27-29. Sung in English, the lyrics by the songwriter of A Little Night Music, Follies, Sunday in the Park With George, Sweeney Todd and Passion will be translated into the Catalan language and projected on a screen.

The concert will be seen in the Foyer, a large gathering place under the stalls of the theatre, where a small stage has been set up. New York-based Fabris directed concert of Leonard Bernstein art songs and show music there in 2001.

The cast of American opera singers (who also crossover into musical theatre in their careers) includes Christine Marie Heath, Rob Boldin, Angela Baade, Creighton James, Randall Mayo, Mary Lou Barber and Scott Dispensa. Richard Carsey, artistic director of Skylight Opera Theatre in Milwaukee, is musical director for the piano-and-voice concert.

A version of this concert first appeared under Fabris' direction at Chautauqua Opera. Fabris told Playbill On Line he's trying to fit Sondheim's "Barcelona" — a morning-after conversation between a man and a stewardess — into the concert.

Songs in the evening will include "One More Kiss," "With So Little To Be Sure Of," "Loving You," "Move On," "What More Do I Need?," "Send in the Clowns," "Not a Day Goes By," "Our Time," "Sorry/Grateful" and more. For more information, visit www.liceubarcelona.com.
