The Op_ra de Montr_al has canceled a planned production of Stravinsky's short opera Oedipus Rex and his Symphony of Psalms in a cost-cutting move, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports.

Film director Fran‹ois Girard's staging of the two works was first seen at Canadian Opera Company in 1997; it was to run February 4-16, 2006, in Montreal. The cast of Oedipus Rex included Gordon Gietz in the title role, Robynne Redmon as Jocasta, and David Pittsinger as Creon. Jacques Lacombe, the principal guest conductor of the Montreal Symphony, was to conduct.

Andr_ Laurin, the company's chairman, told the paper that eliminating the production would reduce its projected deficit from C$1.2 million to about C$500,000.

Op_ra de Montr_al posted a C$1.5 million deficit in 2004-05.
