The New York Post reports that the award-winning actress is currently taking part in readings of Peter Morgan's The Audience in London. The new play from the author of "The Queen" and Frost/Nixon chronicles Elizabeth II's 60-year reign. The Post says should Mirren commit to the role, the play may be produced in London in the fall followed by a possible Broadway bow in spring 2013.
The Audience, according to the New York daily, "unfolds against the backdrop of dramatic, historical events — the Suez crisis, the Profumo affair (which led to the fall of Harold Macmillan's government), the rise of Margaret Thatcher and the 1982 Falklands War. Domestic dramas include the fire at Windsor Castle, which rattled the queen, Charles and Diana’s marriage and divorce and, of course, Diana’s death, which was the subject of 'The Queen.'"
Helen Mirren received Tony nominations for both of her Broadway outings, Dance of Death and A Month in the Country.
