News PHOTO CALL: Stephen Karam, Alan Menken and Michael John LaChiusa Honored at Dramatists Guild Awards Stephen Karam, Alan Menken and Michael John LaChiusa were among the recipients of 2012 Dramatists Guild of America awards, which were presented Feb. 26 at the Lambs Club in New York.

Lisa Kron hosted the evening. Kenita Miller (The Color Purple) was the evening's performer.

Karam received the 2012 Hull-Warriner Award for his play Sons of the Prophet, which received its New York City premiere with Roundabout Theatre Company in October 2011. The award is presented to an author or team of authors "in recognition of their play dealing with controversial subjects involving the fields of political, religious, or social mores of the times." Karam is also the author of Speech & Debate.

Menken and LaChiusa each received the Frederick Loewe Award for Dramatic Composition for the Tony-winning score of Newsies and the Drama Desk-nominated score of Queen of the Mist, respectively. The award "recognizes achievement in a theatrical score presented in New York during the previous theatrical season."

Other honorees included Philip Kan Gotanda, who will receive the Flora Roberts Award "in recognition of distinguished work in the theater and to encourage the continuation of that work"; and Micki Grant, who will receive the Dramatists Guild Award for Lifetime Achievement "in recognition of lifetime achievement in theatrical writing."
