News PHOTO CALL: The Bacchae, with Mackie, Groff and De Shields, Opens Off-Broadway Anthony Mackie, Jonathan Groff, André De Shields and the cast of The Public Theater staging of The Bacchae celebrated opening night Aug. 24 at the Delacorte Theater.

JoAnne Akalaitis directs the new outdoor production of the Greek tragedy "about what happens when a government attempts to outlaw desire," as show notes describe. The show features a choral score by Philip Glass. The ensemble also features April Armstrong, George Bartenieff, Sullivan Corey, Marisa Echeverría, Tara Hugo, Jennifer Ikeda, Karen Kandel, Jennifer Nikki Kidwell, Alexa Kryzaniwsky, Vella Lovell, Joan MacIntosh, Nana Mensah, Steven Rishard, Ereni Sevasti, Elena Shaddow, Rocco Sisto and Han Tang.
