Picnic producer Darren Bagert, who is pursuing star casting for his production, said the aim is to open on Broadway in fall 2012. A June reading of Picnic boasted Academy Award-winning "The Fighter" actress Melissa Leo as Flo with Hayden Panettiere ("Heroes") as Flo's daughter Madge; Laura Innes ("ER") as neighbor Rosemary; War Horse's Seth Numrich as student Alan; theatre veteran Lois Smith as Helen Potts; and Finn Wittrock as Hal. Picnic, about passions of Midwesterners aroused when a stranger comes to town over a hot Labor Day holiday, originally opened in 1953, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; it was adapted into an Academy Award-winning motion picture in 1955.
A Few Good Men producer Ken Davenport, who is also interested in casting stars that will attract both regular theatergoers and tourists, is also aiming for next season. The revival will feature direction by David Esbjornson, who helmed the 2005 London production of the Sorkin play.
A Few Good Men ran on Broadway for 15 previews and 497 performances from 1989-91 at the Music Box Theatre.
