The death of Princess Margaret has deprived London theatre of one of its greatest Royal supporters.
The late princess was a devotee of ballet, and of the Royal Ballet in particular, but she moved in many artistic circles, including the theatre.
Coming from a culture where the theatre was looked on as either duty - Royal Variety Performances, dutiful trips to the occasional Shakespeare, appearances at the shorter operas - or as light relief, she had the breadth and depth of artistic interests to take in a variety of stage shows as well.
