The new musical Monsoon Wedding, based on the 2001 film of the same name, officially opened at California’s Berkeley Rep May 19. Mira Nair, who directed the original movie, helms the world-premiere production of the stage adaptation.

Featuring a score by Vishal Bhardwaj and Susan Birkenhead and a book by Sabrina Dhawan, Monsoon Wedding follows an arranged marriage in Delhi between the only daughter of an upper-middle class Indian family and an Indian-American guy she has yet to meet. As the four-day celebration unravels, so do family secrets—from financial troubles to affairs.
