The production will be directed by Union artistic director Sasha Regan, with choreography by Lizzie Gee and musical direction by Christopher Peake. It is presented by the Union Theatre in association with R&H Theatricals.
Set in Monterey, CA, the musical tells the story of the romance between Doc, a marine biologist, and Suzy, who in the novel is a prostitute; her profession is only alluded to in the stage work.
The cast will feature Kieran Brown as Doc, Charlotte Scott as Suzy and Virge Gilhrist as Fauna, joined by David Haydn, Nick Martland, Matt Parsons, Christopher Connor, Shane Landers, Mitchell Jarvis, John Hicks, Joshua Lovell, Georgie Burdett, Catherine Sagar, Michaela Cartmell, Rebecca Fennelly, Clare Duffy and Alexandra Lloyd-Hamilton.
The show originally premiered at Broadway's Shubert Theatre Nov. 30, 1955, with the largest-ever advance up to that point: $1.2 million. Despite being nominated for nine Tony Awards, the production only won one for Costume Design and lost the Best Musical award to Damn Yankees. It shuttered after 245 performances in June 1956.
