Sam Mendes, who won an Academy Award for his direction of American Beauty, is in early talks to develop and direct a live-action remake of James and the Giant Peach for Disney, according to Deadline.com.

Nick Hornby will pen the screenplay for James, adapted from the classic book by Roald Dahl. The property was first translated to film for Disney in 1996.

The live-action James and the Giant Peach would join the ranks of Maleficent, Cinderella and Jungle Book, with live-action films in the works such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Cruella and Dumbo.

James and the Giant Peach was also developed into a musical by Tony Award-nominated A Christmas Story songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and book writer Timothy Allen McDonald. Click here to read more about how the musical came to life.
