In The Brave, Ferlie, a Scottish housewife, has traveled to North Africa for a long-awaited reunion with her estranged sister. The play opens with Ferlie standing over the body of a dead man who tried to rape her. Trouble ensues for Ferlie, not only because she murdered a man, but because she's a foreigner who has killed a Muslim man in the country of his birth. The play continues with Ferlie and her sister trying to escape the trouble they are in.
