The Seattle Repertory Theatre production of Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, co-hosted with Berkeley Repertory, closes March 26 at the Rep in order to make its way to Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum, where it begins performances April 6. The Seattle run at the Intiman was already on extension from the originally-announced March 19 closing date. The run began Feb. 14 with an opening Feb. 21.

With a swimming pool as the performance's centerpiece, Metamorphoses stages the great transformation myths of Ovid with additional material compiled by Zimmerman from other sources, including the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. King Midas, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Cupid and Psyche all make appearances during the evening, wherein they change physically, emotionally and mentally. Zimmerman, a MacArthur Fellowship ("Genius Grant") recipient, is known for her innovative work with classical texts including The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci and The Odyssey, which she recently staged for Chicago's Goodman Theatre. Zimmerman is a Resident Manilow Director at the Goodman and an ensemble member of Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company, where Metamorphoses premiered in 1998.

The Metamorphoses company, which requires the playing of several roles per actor, features Anjali Bhimani, Raymond Fox, Doug Hara, Hallie Beaune Jacobson, Chris Kipiniak, Louise Lamson, Barry Alan Levine, Erik Lochtefeld, Jessica Meyers and Lisa Tejero.

Designing the show are Daniel Ostling (sets), Mara Blumenfeld (costumes), T. J. Gerckens (lighting) and Andre Pluess (sound). Willy Schwarz provides the original score and some of the sound design.
