Known for their performances in Washington Square Park, the group, which was founded by Dan Hasse and Rose Bochner, stage the tragic love story at the Gym at Judson. The production continues through Feb. 8.

Directed by Hasse, the cast includes Elise Kibler (The Heidi Chronicles, London Wall), Constantine Malahias (Much Ado About Nothing, I Remember Mama), Taylor Myers (Sleep No More, Hamlet), Chris Dooly (An Enemy of the People, The Sisters Rozensweig) and Jack De Sanz (As You Like It, Skylight).

"For The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare in the Square is working closely with the text of the First Folio," press notes state. "Published in 1623, the First Folio is considered the only reliable source for about 20 of Shakespeare’s plays and a valuable resource text, even for many of his previously published works. Shakespeare in the Square is committed to recreating the original Elizabethan staging practices, including direct interactions with some of the audience and a small company of five (mostly male) actors."

"Our hope is to blow the dust off Shakespeare’s plays and revive the original bear-baiting, beer-drinking rowdiness of Elizabethan theatre," Hasse said in a previous statement.

Audiences have the opportunity to sit on gallant stools against the stage, where they can interact with the characters.

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet features sets and props by Phil Falino, costumes by Liz McGlone, lighting by Timothy Meola and musical direction by Chris Dubrow.
