The plan was revealed Jan. 19 at Goodspeed's Eighth Annual Festival of New Artists. The show, developed regionally, has a book by David Stern and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the songwriter of Broadway's Pippin, Godspell and Wicked. No additional creative team or cast were announced.
"This romantic comedy blends the best-loved music of Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz with some of his lesser known gems," according to Goodspeed. "Snapshots takes place in the attic of Sue and Dan, a couple whose 30-year marriage has begun to fall apart. Together they discover a box of photographs which leads them to relive the memories of their past selves captured in the snapshots. Featuring fresh lyrics and orchestrations, Snapshots reveals the humorous twists of how love united them and why life has pushed them apart."
Among the show's 20 songs are "Popular" (Wicked), "Corner of the Sky" (Pippin), "Endless Delight" (Baker's Wife), "That's How You Know" (the film "Enchanted"), "All Good Gifts" (Godspell) and "Fathers and Sons" (Working).
Unlike most composer compilation shows, Snapshots includes some new lyrics, written to fit the story and characters at hand. "As happens when you're writing an original musical from scratch, the story and the characters made the demands of what the material should be," Schwartz said in a statement.
Expect a "marriage of story and song [that] lovingly addresses life's rites of passage." The Norma Terris Theatre is Goodspeed's home for new musicals. For more about the two-time Tony Award-honored Goodspeed Musicals, visit goodspeed.org.
