Classic Arts News Soprano Anna Netrebko Makes Surprise Appearance at Kennedy Center Honors The performance of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy in tribute to Leon Fleisher wasn't the only classical music to turn up at last night's Kennedy Center Honors gala.
Anna Netrebko, the glamorous Russian soprano who was recently named Musical America's Musician of the Year for 2008, made a surprise appearance to serenade film director Martin Scorsese, another of the five honorees, with "O mio babbino caro," the famous aria from Puccini's comedy Gianni Schicchi.

"I am both thrilled and humbled to be honoring Martin Scorsese," she said in a statement. "I have always felt a special connection to his works: partly because of their operatic influences, but mostly just because they are fantastic films!"

CBS-TV will broadcast the 2007 Kennedy Center Honors, including Netrebko's Puccini paean, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time on December 26; check your local listings for the broadcast time in your area.
