"We changed [formats] as of July 19," operations manager Jim Roope told Playbill On-Line (July 28). "We'd been an all-news station and we knew we wanted to do show music, but that was a big transition, so between Dec. 31, 1996 and now, we just did all-Beatles, which was very popular for a while, but really a stop-gap until this was all in place."

Credit station owner Sol Levine with the format change to `All Showtunes: Broadway To Hollywood.' "The music [is] both show tunes and Hollywood film soundtracks," said Roope. "We're gathering as many contemporary versions of these songs as we can, so we can intersperse the two. For example, for Evita, we can play Mandy Patinkin opposite Antonio Banderas."

A KGIL spokesperson said the station would likely expand soon to 1650 AM. -- By David Lefkowitz
