The 1990 play is a satiric romance set in a soulless post-apocalyptic world where love has no place. Here, Adam and Diane try haplessly to forge a connection.
Speaking about the production, director Allison Eve Zell said, "I want to let Square One be the love story that it is. It takes place in a futuristic shallow world, but I don't want to burden the actors with having to play this 'sci-fi' aspect of the script, so the play needs a design concept to realize this landscape. Since Adam and his world are two-dimensional, our design presents them as literally flat, with the aid of video, and special effects. Diane, on the other hand, being a three-dimensional person in this environment, exists apart from this reality." The Yugoslavia-born Tesich wrote many plays before his early death in 1996, including The Speed of Darkness, Arts and Leisure and Division Street. He is perhaps best known, however, for his Oscar-winning script for the film "Breaking Away."
