Tom Stoppard's comedy-drama begins in 1809 with young Thomasina, an undiscovered child prodigy, wondering about romance and mathematical patterns, while her tutor, Septimus, pursues the women at their estate. Nearly two centuries later, two scholars, Hannah and Bernard, investigate events from the past, looking for sensational duels, the escapades of Lord Byron, and the evolution of the garden. The present complements the past as the modern characters wrestle with new discoveries of literature, mathematics and the heart.

Stoppard and co-writer Marc Norman received the Academy Award for the screenplay of "Shakespeare in Love," which also took a Best Picture statuette. Other Stoppard plays include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Indian Ink, Travesties and The Real Thing.

Winner of the 1995 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, and the 1994 Olivier Award, London Critics Circle Award and the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, Arcadia was first produced in 1994 at the Royal National Theatre in London and then moved to the West End. In March 1995, Arcadia had its American premiere on Broadway at Lincoln Center.

The Tennessee cast includes Courtney Oliver, John Maness (as Septimus), Jonathan Lamar, Sarah Stevens, Sean Lyttle. Upcoming on the Playhouse stage, also in mid-July, will be the revue A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline.
