The Playwrights Horizons production of Taylor Mac's Hir began previews Oct. 16. The new Off-Broadway play is billed as a "subversive comedy" with a cast led by Tony nominee and two-time Obie winner Kristine Nielsen (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), joined by transgender teen actor Tom Phelan from the groundbreaking TV series "The Fosters."
Helmed by Niegel Smith, Hir follows the story of a wife and mother (played by Nielsen) who finds herself liberated from an oppressive marriage and "on a crusade to dismantle the patriarchy," state press notes. Phelan plays her son, who is "newly out transgender," and her ally.
