News The Big Voice: God or Merman? to Arrive Off-Broadway Nov. 25
The Big Voice: God or Merman?, a new musical created and performed by Jim Brochu and Steve Schalchlin, will begin performances Nov. 25 at the new Off-Broadway space The Actors Temple Theatre.

The musical, which has previously been seen in Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Dallas, will officially open Nov. 30. Big Voice was also part of the 2005 New York Musical Theater Festival.

Directed by Anthony Barnao, the musical from the creators of The Last Session will feature scenic and lighting design by Clifton Taylor, costume design by Elizabeth Flores and sound design by David Gotwald. Producers are Murphy Cross, Paul Kreppel and Edmund Gaynes.

In The Big Voice: God or Merman? Brochu and Schalchlin, according to press notes, "musicalize their relationship and hilariously prove that showbiz is as much a calling as the priesthood. This high energy, razzle-dazzle show chronicles the lives of a Baptist from Arkansas and a Catholic from Brooklyn who find eternal salvation in the temple of musical theatre." The biographical musical "traces the couple's meeting aboard a ship in the Atlantic Ocean, Steve's struggle with AIDS, the production of their hit Off-Broadway musical The Last Session, their separation and their reconciliation. It's a comedy about a 'gay marriage' between two men created by the couple themselves."

In a statement, writer-actor Brochu said, "After touring the country, we are so thrilled to bring The Big Voice to New York audiences. Our story is filled with ups and downs, tragedy and hilarity, but is one that anyone - gay, straight, male or female - can relate to. If your religion is entertainment, this is the show for you."

The Big Voice will play Tuesday-Thursday evenings at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3 and 8 PM and Sundays at 3 and 7 PM. Late-night Friday performances (at 10:30 PM) will begin Dec. 8. Tickets may be purchased by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting The Actors Temple Theatre is located in Manhattan at 339 West 47th Street.
