The limited engagement at the York, originally slated to end July 31, will now run through Aug. 29. The original cast of the musical comedy — including authors Rockwell and Bogart and actors Craig Fols and Lovette George — has returned for the show's current run. In a statement York artistic director James Morgan recently said, "We are delighted to be able to bring The Musical of Musicals – The Musical! back. We extended the original run as many times as we could, but had to close for a previously scheduled production. We are very excited that we have been able to re-arrange our current season to allow Musicals to re-open. There has been a great demand for tickets since its initial run, from people who didn’t get to see it – and from those who want to see it a second or third time."
The Musical of Musicals — featuring music by Eric Rockwell, lyrics by Joanne Bogart and a book by Rockwell and Bogart — is a satire of various musical theatre genres. One story is played five times, each in the style of a different musical theatre composer, including Rodgers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim. The musical was nominated for a 2004 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and the CD is now available in stores on the Jay Records label.
The Musical of Musicals plays Monday-Saturday evenings at 8 PM, with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:30 PM. Tickets, priced $55, are available by calling (212) 868-4444 or by visiting www.smarttix.com. The York Theatre is located at 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street.
