News The Weir to Open at San Jose Rep Jan. 29 Conor McPherson's The Weir, which won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play, will open at San Jose Repertory Theatre Jan. 29 following previews that began Jan. 23.

Directed by Rick Lombardo, San Jose Rep's artistic director, The Weir features Zillah Glory (Valerie), Alex Moggridge (Brendan), Andy Murray (Finbar), Mark Anderson Phillips (Jim) and Robert Sicular (Jack).

According to press notes, in The Weir, "the denizens of a rural Irish pub attempt to break the silence by sharing hauntingly beautiful tales about the natural and supernatural.

"Valerie has moved from the city of Dublin to rural Ireland. Her real estate agent, Finbar brings her into a pub where a group of lonely souls seek refuge from the bluster of the outside world. By telling stories, they create a haunting and poetic sense of family to break the silence of their isolation. When they discover Valerie has moved into a house considered 'haunted,' the tales of the supernatural begin. Small mysteries evolve into eerie astonishments as the ghostly storytelling soars into liberating confessions of love, loss and loneliness. Half-hidden wounds are revealed throughout an evening of drink and ego-driven rivalry for Valerie’s attention, bringing these drinking buddies together in unexpected and deeply felt ways."

The Weir features scenic and costume design by Annie Smart, lighting design by Dawn Chiang and sound design by Rick Lombardo.

Performances continue through Feb. 21 at San Jose Rep, 101 Paseo de San Antonio. For tickets or more information, call (408) 367-7255 or visit www.sjrep.com.
