Three theatre artists -- Lee Breuer, Luis Alfaro and Han Ong -- were among 23 recipients of the 1997 the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowships, commonly known as the MacArthur “Genius” grants. Here are the winners and how much they got:
Lee Breuer, 60 of New York, playwright (Gospel at Colonus, many others) and co-founder of Mabou Mines Theater in New York. $355,000.
Luis Alfaro, 35, Los Angeles, a performance artist and playwright. Teaches in the Writer's Program at the University of California, L.A. Grant: $230,000.
Han Ong, 29, New York, playwright and performer (Chang Fragments). $200,000.
