News   Thoroughly Modern Lyricist Scanlan Heads to Birdland May 8
Dick Scanlan, the actor, writer and lyricist who was nominated for two Tony Awards (Best Book and Best Score) for Thoroughly Modern Millie, will go it solo at Birdland May 8.

During his 7 PM performance Scanlan, according to press notes, will "recount his experiences on the other side of the footlights as an original cast member in the 1991 cult hit musical, Pageant. Set against the backdrop of the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic, this is a frank, funny and affectionate monologue about playing a woman . . . and becoming a man." Dick Scanlan wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book for the Tony-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. With Jeanine Tesori, he also wrote the song "The Girl in 14G" as well as the theme song for Kristin Chenoweth's NBC sitcom "Kristin." His novel is titled "Does Freddy Dance," and he appeared Off-Broadway as Miss Great Plains in the hit musical Pageant.

Birdland is located in Manhattan at 315 West 44th Street. There is a $25 cover charge and a $10 food/drink minimum; call (212) 591-3080 for reservations.
