Tony Carlin has stepped into the role of Louis in the Broadway production of Bernhardt/Hamlet, a new comedy-drama about Sarah Bernhardt by Pulitzer finalist Theresa Rebeck. Carlin replaces Paxton Whitehead, who has departed the production for health reasons.
Previously understudy to Whitehead, Carlin has been performing the role of Louis as of September 12. His previously Broadway credits include Pygmalion, Heartbreak House, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Saint Joan, Junk, Fish in the Dark, Sylvia, and All the Way.
Bernhardt/Hamlet, directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel in a world-premiere production from Roundabout Theatre Company, began previews August 31 at the American Airlines Theatre. The production will officially open September 25 as scheduled.

Bernhardt/Hamlet stars Golden Globe, Tony, and Olivier Award winner Janet McTeer as the legendary Bernhardt, a trailblazing early 20th century French actor renowned for her presence both onstage and off.
Set against a lavish, late 19th century production of Hamlet starring Bernhardt in her make-or-break role, Rebeck’s new play paints a portrait of a legend as well as the chaos and passion of making theatre.
The cast also features Dylan Baker as Constant Coquelin and Jason Butler Harner as Edmond Rostand, along with Matthew Saldivar as Alphonse Mucha, Nick Westrate as Maurice, Ito Aghayere as Rosamond, Brittany Bradford as Lysette, Aaron Costa Ganis as Raoul, and Triney Sandoval as Francois.
The creative team includes Beowulf Boritt (set design), Toni-Leslie James (costume design), Bradley King (lighting design), and Fitz Patton (original music and sound design).
