News   Tony Winner Lopez Will Play New York Stage Mother in Reading of Tio Pepe
Tony Award winner Priscilla Lopez will appear in a reading of Matthew Lopez's Tio Pepe at New Jersey's Luna Stage May 23.

Harriet Power will direct the reading, which is scheduled for 7:30 PM at the Montclair stage. A post-show talkback with the playwright (the nephew of the star) is scheduled.

"Set against the background of the golden age of American musicals and the bustle and growth of Robert Moses' New York," Tio Pepe centers on "Inez Candelaria and her three children [who] are singers, dancers and actors living in 1950's New York who dream of a life as Broadway gypsies." Show notes explain, "Their dreams are confronted by the reality of the demolition of their apartment building to make way for the new Lincoln Center complex that's being planned for their neighborhood."

The cast will also feature Chad Hoeppner, Mike Caban and Keith McDonald.

Lopez earned her Tony for her turn in A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine and was also nominated for her role in A Chorus Line. Other credits include Anna in the Tropics, Nine, Pippin, Company, Beauty of the Father and Class Mothers '68. She currently appears in the Off-Broadway musical In The Heights.

A donation of $5 is suggested for the Tio Pepe reading at Luna Stage, 695 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, NJ. For more information, call (973) 744-3309 or visit
