News Tony Winner Wood and Wolf Set for Side Man in Los Angeles Tony Award-winning actor Frank Wood will re-create his performance as jazz trumpeter Gene in the L.A. Theatre Works production of Warren Leight's Side Man.

Stephen Sachs will direct the LATW run that is scheduled to play May 12-16 as part of "The Play's the Thing" series at the Skirball Cultural Center.

In addition to Wood (who earned a Tony Award for his Broadway debut in the play), the cast will feature Scott Wolf — a replacement during the play's Broadway run — as Gene's son Clifford. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

LATW describes the play as "a rich and moving tribute to a lost era of jazz and big bands, a time before the birth of rock 'n’ roll when jazz musicians were legends."

Michael Mayer directed the 1998 Off-Off-Broadway production of Side Man, which later transferred to Broadway and earned the Tony Award for Best Play. The play was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

As with all LATW productions, the play will be recorded and broadcast on LATW's nationally syndicated radio theatre series, "The Play's the Thing." For tickets to any of "The Play's the Thing" productions at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Boulevard, call the L.A. Theatre Works box office at (310) 827-0889.
