News   Uptown Spring Theatre Festival to Stage "Gatsby"-esque Once Upon a Mattress
The musical theatre program at Marymount Manhattan College (MMC), a private liberal arts college on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, continues its theatre festival honoring three generations of musical writers: Richard Rodgers, Mary Rodgers and Adam Guettel.

On March 4 the festival will present Guettel and Craig Lucas' musical The Light in the Piazza at the Theresa Lang Theatre at Marymount Manhattan College. The production is directed by Bethany C. Elkin, with musical direction by Justin S. Fischer, and features Guettel’s five-piece orchestration. Performances of the romantic play continue through March 8. Slated next is a staging of Mary Rodgers' Once Upon a Mattress, a comic musical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” Re-imagined in the 1920's, the MMC production will present a "Gatsby"-esque retelling at the York Theatre Company at Citicorp Center. The direction and choreography will be by Parallel Exit performer Ryan Kasprzak with music direction by W. Brent Sawyer. The Michael Feinstein American Songbook winner for this year, Madelyn Baillio, plays the character of Winifred, and The York Theatre Company artistic director, James Morgan, will design sets. Performances will run March 25-28.
