Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently told celebrity blogger Perez Hilton that Pattinson is a possibility for the film, which is aiming for a 2013 theatrical release. When asked who he would like to see in a starring role, Armstrong said, "I'm gonna say that kid in 'Twilight.' He’s a good actor. There’s still more to come with that kid."
Based on Green Day's groundbreaking rock opera album "American Idiot," the musical is about three suburban pals who take divergent paths in post-9/11 America.
American Idiot wrapped its run on Broadway earlier this year, closing April 24. The musical was nominated for the 2010 Tony as Best Musical, and won two Tonys for its scenic and lighting design. The show also won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, plus a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
Armstrong and American Idiot director Michael Mayer, the team who co-created the Broadway musical, will reunite to collaborate on the film.
