Working, the short-lived 1978 Broadway musical based on the book by Studs Terkel that was originally adapted by Stephen Schwartz, who also contributed songs alongside other composers, is to receive its European premiere at London's Southwark Playhouse, beginning performances June 2, 2017, prior to an official opening June 7, for a run through July 8.

The new version of the musical is adapted by Schwartz and Nina Faso, with additional contributions by Gordon Greenberg. In addition to Schwartz, other songs are by Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, and James Taylor.

The production will be directed by Luke Sheppard and choreographed by Fabian Aloise. Casting is still to be announced. It is produced by Jack Maple, Ramin Sabi, and D.E.M. Productions.

In a statement, Schwartz commented, “I am delighted that such a talented and distinguished theatre company will be presenting Working in London. I look forward to collaborating with them to ensure that the show is both entertaining and relevant to the contemporary British audience.”

Working first opened on Broadway in 1978. It has undergone several revisions, with additional songs by Miranda being introduced in 2009. Working was last performed Off-Broadway in December 2012, under the direction of Gordon Greenberg.
