DESCRIPTION

The Spirits’ Speakeasy, is an immersive experience tailored for the Halloween Season. Atmospheric performances by roaming magicians and cabaret acts, custom cocktails and small plates available for purchase, and period music will set the stage for the main event: a series of seances conducted by the famed spiritualist Margery. Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes and a devoted spiritualist will serve as the host for this event, and will be joined by other historical figures to determine if spiritualism is real, or merely an illusion.

ROLES:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Author of Sherlock Holmes, and the Host of our Salon. Doyle was an avid believer in the supernatural and a huge champion for Margery, believing her to be a genuine and gifted medium with a connection to the beyond. Has invited his friend Harry Houdini to be there to test her and hopefully come to acknowledge her genuine talents, proving spiritualism is real. British, Male, 50s-60s.

Mina “Margery” Crandon - The star of this evening’s salon and a famed Spiritualist Medium out of Boston. Arthur Conan Doyle has been championing her and is insistent she is the real deal. Is facing tests this evening to prove her authenticity and will win a prize from Scientific American magazine should she succeed. Seductive, independent, and determined. American, Female, 30s. CAST

Harry Houdini - Sir Doyle’s close friend, an escape artist and illusionist, and a major spiritualism skeptic. Hot headed and brash with no patience for con-artistry. He will provide magical performances throughout the evening to prove that Margery’s “talents” are all illusion. Must have magic experience. Hungarian American, Male, 40s-50s. CAST

Howard Thurston - One of Harry Houdini’s greatest professional rivals, a fellow magician and also a devoted spiritualist. Where Harry is hot headed and crude, Thurston is charismatic and charming; the ultimate showman. He will be performing dueling magic with Harry and using the opportunity of Harry losing his temper to appear all the better in comparison. Must have magic experience. American, Male, 40s-50s.

Bess Houdini - a former vaudevillian, and longtime stage assistant to her husband Harry. She often has to play his manager and attempt to do damage control throughout the evening as Harry’s temper comes out. Although she is also anti-spiritualist, she is much more diplomatic about it. She will provide various song and dance performances throughout the night to distract and keep the mood light. Must have cabaret experience. American, Female, 30s-40s.

A Pianist - Bess’s vaudeville accompanist, a charming and dynamic entertainer and personality. They will provide atmospheric music (Jazz, Charleston, Music Hall) throughout the evening, and provide accompaniment for Bess performance numbers. American, Male, All Ages. **strong preference for performers playing Bess and the Pianist to have actual experience working together.**

Male Swing - versatile performer to cover Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Must have magic experience. Male, 40s-50s.

Female Swing - versatile performer to cover Bess Houdini and Margery. Must have magic and cabaret experience. Female, 30s.

Pay rate will be $150 per performance for named roles, plus $20/hr pay for rehearsals.
