BREAKDOWN

SMASH (Broadway)
SMASH is an original musical comedy set in the present day, about the misadventures - both on and off stage - during the rehearsal of a new musical entitled “Bombshell, the Marilyn Monroe story”.

Actively seeking diversity of every kind and in every role; trans, gender non-conforming, and actors with disabilities of every ethnicity are encouraged to attend.

SEEKING:
Karen – character portrayed is female, early-mid-30s, any ethnicity. A triplethreat who’s understudied IVY for four shows. She knows Ivy, she’s thought of as an “Ivy Type”, and she’s earned her living for a dozen years, watching her in rehearsal and preparing to go on for her. In Bombshell, she finally thinks she’s going to get her chance. Married to Charlie. A STRONG DANCER AS THIS ROLE IS PART OF ALL OF THE “BOMBSHELL" PRODUCTION NUMBERS, AND HAS STRONG COMEDIC SKILLS. ABLE TO BELT THE SONG “DON’T FORGET ME”

Anita – character portrayed is female, 50s-60s. Former Fosse dancer turned powerhouse Broadway producer. Confident and smart. A long and colorful history with Broadway in general and with Nigel in specific.

Jerry – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is male, 30s-40s. Composer of Bombshell and several other celebrated musicals. Married to Tracy, his long-time collaborator. Opinionated, but wary of confrontation. Anxious.

Ivy Lynn – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is female, 30s-40s. A triple-threat Broadway Star at the height of her career with millions of adoring fans. Bright, funny, slightly intimidating. Passionate about the work. Fully immerses herself in her character - this becomes a problem.

Chloe – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is female, 30s. Former dancer/singer/actress now associate Director. Nigel’s right hand. Smart, knows how to take her status.

Nigel – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is male, 50s-60s. Successful director/choreographer of Broadway musicals. Sarcastic, somewhat world-weary. Has seen it all and done it all. Once a dancer in the ensemble, he clawed his way out to become a director.

Tracy – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is female, 30s-40s. Lyricist/book writer of Bombshell and several other celebrated musicals. Married to her long-time collaborator, Jerry. Smart, politically and culturally astute, prone to confrontation.

Susan – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is female, 60s-70s. Teacher at the Actor’s Studio. Legendary practitioner of the Method. Dresses in black. Emotes frequently. Demands total commitment from her students. Ivy’s coach/mentor/Svengali.

Scott – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is male, 20s. The son of a wealthy investor. Knows nothing about musicals. Gradually becomes addicted to the backstage drama.

Charlie – THE ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. character portrayed is male, 30s. Handsome actor/singer/dancer. Plays Joe DiMaggio in Bombshell. Easy going and well-liked but fiercely protective of his wife, Karen.
