DEPARTMENT: Production, Stage Operations

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time; Seasonal; Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime)

REPORTS TO: Stage Supervisor / Head Sound Engineer

LOCATION & SCHEDULE: This is an in-person position reporting to our administrative offices and theaters located at 91 University Place in Princeton, NJ. Schedule will include nights, weekends, and some holidays, as scheduled in advance. Weekly schedule will vary, with 40 hours guaranteed, dependent on production needs and availability.

START DATE: This position will be filled as early as possible with a start date of July 15th, 2024 through June 15th, 2025

Position Summary

Join McCarter Theatre Center as a Sound Engineer and immerse yourself in the world of live performance. As a member of our Production and stage operations team, you'll play a crucial role in delivering exceptional audio experiences for a diverse range of theatre-series productions, presented events, and other special happenings. From executing sound designs to operating state-of-the-art audio equipment, you'll collaborate closely with the Head Sound Engineer to create remarkable moments that captivate audiences. Essential Functions & Duties

· Assist the Head Sound Engineer in maintaining and operating all sound and video equipment.

· Run the sound console for tech and performances as scheduled/assigned.

· Operate as the house sound engineer for presented events.

· Implement small sound systems for remote playback or recording.

· Stay informed on current advancements in audio technology and industry trends, actively seeking opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement.

· Work load-in, strike, and run crew for produced and presented shows as scheduled.

· Maintain organization and cleanliness of all sound storage and workspaces.

· Assist on other Stage Operations projects as time permits.

· Prioritize safe working practices while embodying McCarter's safety and code of conduct policies to maintain a secure environment for all staff and guest artists.

· Actively participate in the work to make McCarter an anti-racist theater by seeking opportunities to enhance inclusivity and equity within the Production department, aligning with and exhibiting our core values of "justice and joy, beauty and belonging."

Qualifications

· Extensive experience as an audio engineer with a strong emphasis on live mixing and playback, demonstrating proficiency in delivering high-quality sound experiences for theatrical productions, concerts, or events.

· Advanced skills in industry-standard computer programs, including Microsoft Office, and Q-Lab, enabling seamless integration of sound designs with production workflows.

· Proficient in operating and troubleshooting a variety of theatrical sound equipment, with expertise in Midas and Yamaha sound consoles, as well as familiarity with Shure wireless systems and Clearcom communication technology.

· Ability to interpret technical ground plans, sections, and sound plots, facilitating effective collaboration with production teams and designers to realize artistic visions.

· Proven track record of quickly and efficiently resolving system issues and technical challenges, ensuring uninterrupted performance and production continuity.

· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering positive working relationships with colleagues and artists across various departments.

· Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate evolving production requirements and schedules, including evening and weekend work.

· Familiarity with relevant safety protocols and regulations pertaining to the operation of sound equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and practices.

· Exhibit a critical consciousness and genuine interest in promoting equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible workplace values and practices while working with individuals of diverse needs, personalities, and work styles, and employing an optimistic and solution-oriented mindset towards fostering inclusivity and support within the team environment.

· Final candidates must have a valid US driver’s license and will be required to successfully complete a background screening with a motor vehicle record check.

Work Environment

· This position will drive vehicles ranging in size up to a cargo van; must be comfortable driving in various weather conditions including heavy rain and snow, as well as at night, within varied distances (e.g. rental supplies in nearby states.)

· This position entails extended periods of standing and sitting, manual dexterity for operating office equipment, and the ability to read and interpret documents, while requiring lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds, engaging in repetitive tasks, walking, bending, and reaching within various work environments, including stairs. Candidates should be comfortable with these physical demands and able to maintain productivity and focus throughout the workday.

· This role will involve working on ladders up to 65 feet high to access sound equipment and rigging. Candidates should be comfortable and experienced working at elevated heights and demonstrate adherence to safety protocols and procedures when working on elevated platforms.

· Work will primarily be completed in a shared office space and in the two theaters located at 91 University Pl, Princeton, NJ with HVAC cooling/heating.

· This position is required to be on-site and in attendance for various performances and events. These will be communicated and scheduled in advance.

· Employees may be asked to use a personal cell phone in order to access authenticator apps and related software necessary for work credentials/multi-factor authentication (MFA). Applicants should be comfortable using their personal devices for these purposes as part of their job responsibilities, as workarounds cannot be guaranteed in order to access certain platforms.
