DESCRIPTION
This deliciously dark new musical comedy, based on the cult film (and the bard’s Macbeth), springs to life in a sleepy Pennsylvania town (population 1,203—and dropping), where a burger-joint manager and his wife cook up a plan to super-size their lives. As their ambitions grow and the bodies fall, the couple finds out just how far they’ll go for a taste of the oh-so-tempting American dream.

CONTENT TRANSPARENCY
Scotland, PA is a “dark comedy” with scripted adult language, reference to drug use, homophobic language, death by suicide, and depictions of blood and firearms/weapons; there is likely use of strobe effect. The eventual production may calibrate the level of feature of such scripted content.

SEEKING
MAC: Age 20-29. Works at a burger joint in central Pennsylvania. Though he’s often drunk or high, he can’t shut off his ambition to improve the restaurant. He’s unintentionally charming. Simple, but not stupid. He’s a hardworking, blue-collar guy and that’s fine by him. For now. Tenor.

PAT: Age 20-29. Works at a burger joint in central PA. Business-minded and opportunistic. She grew up sleeping in a winter coat and now has everything she dreamed of. Propels her drunken husband forward in their quest to seek more. Conniving, but for the right things in life. Has a strong pop belt/mix. Mezzo/Alto.

PEG McDUFF: Age 30-49. Oddball vegetarian detective who has never not solved a case. Sharp, sneaky, and fun. The kind of person who has full funerals for her pets. Has a strong belt. Alto.

DUNCAN / RAY CRUMP: Age 40-59. Owner of the dingy burger joint in central PA. A hard-edged jerk who believes that he always has the answer and that his success is because he “works harder,” not because he had many advantages in his life. Makes people feel bad so that he feels good. Baritone.

DOUG / ANDY the VAGRANT: Age 20-39. Works at a burger joint in central PA. A weasel. He’s sleazy to the female employees and a brown-noser to the boss. Serves food out of the garbage to children for no reason other than personal amusement. Tenor/Baritone.

MRS. LENOX: Age 40-59. Works at a burger joint in central PA. Playful and a bit of a rascal. Dry in her delivery. The kind of person who smokes while cooking eggs. Alto.

MALCOLM: Age 18+. To play late teens, petulant and outraged. A non-stop swearing rebel teenager filled with rage directed at everybody, especially his father, Duncan. Loves football even though he is not a great player. A strong singer. Tenor.

HECTOR / BERT (u/s Malcolm) Age 20-29. One of three “witch-stoner” characters. Vicious, playful, detached, spooky. Comfortable with tight harmonies. High tenor.

STACEY / BRENDA / SOUND TECHNICIAN (u/s Pat): Age 20-29. One of three “witch-stoner” characters. Vicious, playful, detached, spooky. Has a strong belt and be comfortable with tight harmonies. Alto.

JESSIE / NANCY LORD (u/s McDuff, Mrs. Lenox) Age 18-29. One of three “witch-stoner” characters. Vicious, playful, detached, spooky. A strong belt/mix, and comfortable with tight harmonies. Alto.

BANKO: (CAST) Age 20-39. Works at a Burger Joint in Central PA. A loveable and perpetually stoned guy. Best friend with a heart of gold. Banko is dim, he once bought a horizontal Porta-Potty thinking it was a coffin for his father. Tenor.

Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
New Book by Douglas Carter Beane
Original Book by Oscar Hammerstein II

KEY DATES
First Rehearsal: October 14, 2024
Tech Begins: November 11, 2024
Opening: November 23, 2024
Closing: January 5, 2025 (possible extension through January 12, 2025)
Typical Performance Schedule: Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30pm; and Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00pm

DESCRIPTION
In keeping with the storyline of the classic folktale, the musical—with updated, hilarious libretto by Douglas Carter Beane that added a few new characters and intrigue-filled plot twists— follows (Cinder)Ella as she hopes for a better life, or at least one far away from her family members’ demands. She is granted that wish by a fairy godmother who, through magic, transforms the young woman and a nearby pumpkin, and helps bring Ella tantalizingly close to the destiny about which she dreams. Also added to the enchanting score of some Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most beloved songs is a sociopolitical spin to the well-known story that layers in themes of poverty, class, and revolution as Cinderella helps open Prince Topher’s eyes to the injustice in the kingdom.

SEEKING:
ELLA: Kindhearted with an infectious generosity of spirit. Though (Cinder)Ella has been flying under the radar, she comes fully into herself as a dynamic person with a great deal to say. Soprano, B3-Eb5. A good mover.

TOPHER: The prince of the kingdom leads with heroic bravado, but is deeply naïve and not always quick on the draw. In search of his purpose. Topher’s kindhearted nature spills into an endearing goofiness at times. Baritone, C#3-A4. A good mover.

MADAME: Ella’s selfish stepmother. A vain and tyrannical climber. Deeply concerned with status and image and entirely dismissive of her stepdaughter. Mezzo-soprano, C4-D5.

GABRIELLE: Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Begins aligned with her materialistic mother and sister but her kindness and thoughtful nature emerge as she is affected by Ella and love interest, Jean-Michel. Perhaps a bit quirky and cut from a different mold than the other social climbers around. Mezzo-soprano, C4-G5.

CHARLOTTE: Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Deeply self-involved attention seeker. Loud, brash and delights in being cocky. Lacks self-awareness and often the last one in on the joke. Mezzo-soprano, B3-F5.

JEAN-MICHEL / ENSEMBLE: An enthusiastic revolutionary determined to make a difference. Energized and on his way to becoming a leader. Baritone, C3-G4. Must be a good mover.

SEBASTIAN / ENSEMBLE: Topher’s Lord Chancellor. Actively shields the prince from what is occurring in the kingdom and revels in maintaining his own power. Disregarding villagers in need, Sebastian is primarily concerned with preserving the wealthy and the reach of his power. Tenor, C3-F4.

LORD PINKELTON / ENSEMBLE: Sebastian’s second-in-command and the herald for all balls and events. Announces royal balls, banquets and even the weather. Tenor, D3-A4. Must be a good mover.

FOX / FOOTMAN (u/s Topher, Jean-Michel): A good mover.

RACCOON / COACHMAN (u/s Ella, Gabrielle, Charlotte): A good mover.

ENSEMBLE (u/s Sebastian, Lord Pinkleton): Includes knights, villagers, people of the court. A good mover.

ENSEMBLE (u/s Marie, Madame): Includes knights, villagers, people of the court. A good mover.

DESCRIPTION
Alison is 9, begging her father to play with her. She is 19, overcome by the aching and joyous pain of first love. She is 43, an out lesbian hunting for the truth of her brilliant, volatile, and closeted father’s life and death. She is all three at once, trying to untangle the central mystery of her childhood: How did she survive their shared hometown, when her father could not? With a score that ranges from exuberant 70s pop to aching melodies and dissonant harmonies of characters longing to be known, Fun Home is the Tony Award-winning story of a daughter and father, of coming out and coming to terms with a life shaped by a family’s secrets.

CONTENT TRANSPARENCY
Fun Home is a moving, funny, and intense musical. The script includes verbal abuse, depictions of homophobia and a death by suicide, and allusions to sexual contact between an adult and teenagers. The eventual production may calibrate the level of feature of such scripted content.

SEEKING
ALISON: A cartoonist and the narrator of this story. Now a self-aware adult, she is able to reflect insightfully on her own life and her relationship with her father before his tragic death. Mezzo-soprano, E3-D5.

MEDIUM ALISON: Alison as a freshman at Oberlin college, discovering her sexuality. For an incredibly well-read, hyper-intelligent teenager, her uncertainty about who she is makes her socially awkward at times. Doubles as a member of The Sandra Deys. Mezzo-soprano, G3-E5.

BRUCE: Alison’s father. A high-school English teacher and funeral home director, who spends his spare time on the historic restoration of his home. A complex man with a hot temper as a result of years of repression. He can be caring and attentive to his children but is also quick to anger. Baritone, A2-G4.
HELEN: Alison’s mother. Frustrated and exhausted by her tumultuous marriage. She has spent her
life trying to be a good mother and wife while turning a blind eye to the irreverent activities of her
husband. Mezzo-soprano, A3 E5.

JOAN: A college student at Oberlin. She exudes a confident, sexual energy, with a dry sense of humor. Unlike Alison, Joan is very comfortable in her skin and openly identifies as a lesbian. Doubles as a member of The Sandra Deys. Alto, G3-G4.

ROY† / PETE / MARK / BOBBY JEREMY: Roy, a young man Bruce hires to do yard work; Pete, a mourner who visits the funeral home; Mark, a high school junior; Bobby Jeremy, the lead singer of a band in Alison’s imagination. Tenor, G3-A4. †The casting directors note that the script describes a moment where the role of ROY unbuttons his
shirt; there will be no nudity at these auditions.

DESCRIPTION
Italy, 1863. Fosca is a melancholic, fragile, love-starved woman whose shredding raw nerves are nearing to a breaking point with the arrival of the alluring new soldier, Giorgio, but the dashing Captain has a dark secret... he is in an illicit, passionately clandestine affair in Milan with Clara, a beguiling married woman with a child. A roller coaster ride of dramatic emotion, Passion is a passionate exposé of how love smashes disparate lives and changes everything. Forever.

SEEKING
FOSCA: Colonel Ricci’s cousin. She is deeply emotionally damaged, and her desire to be loved teeters between longing and desperation. Smart, well read, and bold. Mezzo-soprano, F3-D5.

CLARA: Giorgio’s lover.† Married to a man with whom she shares a son. Perhaps shallow. Soprano, Ab3-F5.

GIORGIO: A dashing soldier who is shattered and ultimately changed by his unconditional and obsessive love of Fosca.† Tenor, F2-G4.

COLONEL RICCI‡: The regiment’s middle-aged commanding officer who carries the weight of his position with authority and ease. Tenor, Db3-G4.

DOCTOR TAMBOURRI / THE FATHER‡: One actor will play both the Doctor, a somewhat aloof and distinguished older officer who is the regiment’s attending physician, and the Father, Fosca’s father who is seen in flashback. Baritone, B2-G4.

LIEUTENANT TORASSO‡: A man who is often given to laughter and opera singing, and is quite aware of the business of others. Baritone, B2-G4.

SERGEANT LOMBARDI‡: A man who serves as the cook. Has no talent for cooking but remains determined. He is impish and can be found gossiping. Baritone, B2-F#4.

LIEUTENANT BARRI / THE MOTHER‡: One (male-presenting) performer plays both Barri, a veterinarian with a love of gambling and not much else, and Fosca’s mother, seen in flashback. Baritone, A2-E4.

MAJOR RIZZOLI / COUNT LUDOVIC‡: One singer plays both the sober and straight-arrow Rizzoli, and Ludovic, Fosca’s duplicitous husband seen in flashback, Baritenor, B2-G4.

PRIVATE AUGENTI / THE MISTRESS‡: One (male-presenting) singer plays Augenti, a private in the army who has a good sense of duty and camaraderie, and the mistress to Count Ludovic in flashbacks. Baritenor, B2-G4.

†The casting directors note that nudity may be required for the roles of GIORGIO and CLARA; there will be no nudity at these auditions. The eventual production may calibrate the level of feature of such scripted content.

‡The doublings listed are a somewhat traditional disbursement of bit roles; the casting directors note the final tracks may differ based upon auditions. For example, one other disbursement could be: TAMBOURRI, RICCI, BARRI / LUDOVIC, RIZZOLI / FATHER, LOMBARDI / MISTRESS, AUGENTI / YOUNG FOSCA / u/s Giorgio, TORASSO / MOTHER.
