News Alexander, Cooper, Glover, Luker, Ritchie and Sullivan Are Part of Dec. 21 Saint Heaven Reading Cheryl Alexander, Chuck Cooper, Montego Glover, Rebecca Luker, Darren Ritchie and Patrick Ryan Sullivan will be part of a free reading of the new musical Saint Heaven Dec. 21.

Part of the 6th Annual Tru Voices Musicals Reading Series, the 7 PM performance will be held at the Blue Heron Arts Center on East 24th Street. Matt Lenz will direct the evening with musical direction by Kelsey Halbert.

Saint Heaven, which is set in 1957 Kentucky, features a book by Martin Casella and music and lyrics by Keith Gordon. The musical was most recently presented during the York Theatre Company's 2004 Developmental Reading Series.

The Dec. 21 reading casts Alexander as Millie Walden, Cooper as Pastor Joe Bertram, Glover as Eshie Willington, Luker as Maggie Hartford, Ritchie as Thomas Rivers and Sullivan as Garrison Martin.

Based on Steve Lyons' novel "The Gift of Tongues," Saint Heaven, according to press notes, concerns “the story of Thom Rivers, a young doctor, who returns home for his father's funeral. Met with unhappy memories — and strong pressure to follow in his beloved father's footsteps, Thom is determined to forget the pain of his past, settle Daddy's affairs, and head back north. But his plans change when he falls in love with a black preacher who speaks in tongues. Believing her to be suffering from epilepsy, he attempts to treat her, sparking a chain of events that affect their lives and all those who live in the small town of Saint Heaven.”

Martin Casella wrote the books for the musicals Paper Moon and Taking Care of Mrs. Carrol. Keith Gordon penned the score for the upcoming musical How to Marry a Millionaire. The Blue Heron Arts Center is located at 123 East 24th Street, between Lexington and Park Avenues. Seating is limited; those wishing to attend should contact [email protected].
