Matt Shakman — who staged the 2008 world premiere at Los Angeles' Black Dahlia Theatre — will direct the New York debut at 59E59 Theaters. Performances begin July 27 towards an Aug. 10 opening night. The limited run is slated to end Sept. 4.

"In show business, it's all about who you know. Or is it?" poses show notes for Secrets of the Trade. The work follows Andy Lipman, "a smart, ambitious kid from Long Island [who] dreams of a career on Broadway and hopes that his idol, theater legend Martin Kerner, can give it to him. Will Kerner open Andy's door to success, or will their complicated relationship force him to question a life in the theater?"

Tony Award winner John Glover (Love! Valour! Compassion, "Smallville") is featured in a five-member cast that also includes Amy Aquino (Third, The Heidi Chronicles), Bill Brochtrup ("NYPD Blue," Theater District), Mark Nelson ( A Few Good Men) and Noah Robbins (Brighton Beach Memoirs). Glover, Aquino and Brochtrup reprise their turns from the original Los Angeles run.

The design team includes Mark Worthington (set), Mike Durst (lights) and John Gromada (sound). The production stage manager is Sarah Caddell.

Playwright Tolins has also penned The Twilight of the Golds, The Last Sunday in June and If Memory Serves for the stage. He also co-wrote (and co-produced) the feature film "Martian Child." Primary Stages will continue its 26th season with the world premiere of the new musical In Transit by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth (Sept. 21-Oct. 30), directed by Joe Calarco. The season will conclude with the world premiere of A.R. Gurney's comedy Black Tie (Jan. 25-March 5, 2011), directed by Mark Lamos.

Tickets for Secrets of the Trade, at the 59E59 Theaters, are available by calling (212) 279-4200. For more information, visit primarystages.org.
