The semi-staged revival of Sunday in the Park with George, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford, officially opens at Broadway's Hudson Theatre February 23. The production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical is playing a strictly limited 10-week engagement through April 23.
The Sarna Lapine-helmed staging, which began as a benefit for New York City Center last fall, started performances February 11 and reopens the Hudson, which first opened its doors in 1903 but has not housed a Broadway production since 1968. Gyllenhaal was originally announced to play the venue with a revival of Burn This, which was subsequently postponed.

Joining Gyllenhaal and Ashford are Tony winners Robert Sean Leonard (Jules/Bob) and Ruthie Ann Miles (Frieda/Betty); Tony nominees Brooks Ashmanskas (Mr./Charles), Phillip Boykin (Boatman/Lee), Penny Fuller (Old Lady/Blair), and Michael McElroy (ensemble); Jenni Barber (Celeste #2/Elaine), Mattea Marie Conforti (Louise), Erin Davie (Yvonne/Naomi), Ashley Park (Celeste #1/Waitress), Jennifer Sanchez (Nurse), David Turner (Franz/Dennis), MaryAnn Hu (ensemble), Claybourne Elder (Soldier/Alex), Liz McCartney (Mrs./Harriet), Jordan Gelber (Louis/Billy), Max Chernin (ensemble), and Jaime Rosenstein (ensemble). Rounding out the company are swings Julie Foldesi and Andrew Kober, as well as dance captain Laura Irion.

I am so happy we will be able to see them on stage again.”
The production features set design by Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt, projection design by Tal Yarden, costume design by Tony Award winner Clint Ramos, lighting design by Tony Award winner Ken Billington, sound design by Tony Award nominee Kai Harada, co-projection design by Christopher Ash, hair and wig design by Cookie Jordan, make-up design by Joe Dulude II, music coordination by Tony honor recipient Seymour Red Press, orchestrations by two-time Tony Award winner Michael Starobin, production supervision by Tony honor recipient Peter Lawrence, casting by Carrie Gardner/Stephen Kopel, technical supervision by Hudson Theatrical Associates, general management by 101 Productions, Ltd., musical staging by Ann Yee, and music direction by Chris Fenwick.
Sunday in the Park with George is produced on Broadway by Adam Speers for Ambassador Theatre Group, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Caiola Productions, Jeffrey Finn, Jere Harris and Darren DeVerna, J/K/R/S, Claire-Bridget Kenwright, LD Entertainment, Benjamin Lowy & Adrian Salpeter, Tulchin Bartner Productions, Jeanine Tesori and Riva Marker; produced in association with New York City Center (Arlene Shuler, President & CEO, Mark Litvin, Managing Director).
The musical made its Broadway debut at the Booth Theatre May 2, 1984, and ran for 604 performances. Starring Mandy Patinkin as George and Bernadette Peters as Dot, the premiere Broadway company also included Barbara Bryne as the Old Lady, Brent Spiner as Franz, Charles Kimbrough as Jules, and Dana Ivey as Yvonne. Sondheim received a Tony nomination for his score, which features such titles as “Finishing the Hat,” “Putting It Together,” “Move On,” and “Sunday.” The show was last revived on Broadway in 2008 by Roundabout Theatre Company.
