Rep Stage at Howard Community College in Maryland has announced its 2016-17 season. Included in the line-up are two regional premieres and the world premiere of Dorian’s Closet, a new musical based on the life of Dorian Corey, who was immortalized in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning.

Dorian’s Closet features a book and lyrics by Richard Mailman and music by Ryan Haase. The new musical is a fictionalized account of Corey’s life, including the discovery of a mummified body in her Harlem apartment’s closet after her death. “From Dorian’s early days touring the drag circuits of the 1970s, through her rise in the underground club scene in New York City in the 1980s and beyond, Dorian’s Closet takes us on a musical journey that explores just how far we will go to make our dreams a reality,” reads an online description of the show. The world-premiere production will be directed by Joseph Ritsch with choreography by Rachel Dolan and musical direction by Stacey Antoine. Performances are set to run April 26-May 14, 2017.

Rep Stage’s season will also feature the regional premieres of Bess Wohl’s dark comedy American Hero and Sharr White’s The Other Place.

Rep Stage is a professional regional theatre in residence at HCC, now celebrating its 24th season. For more information visit repstage.org/.
